It was a record-breaking weekend as car enthusiasts packed the road to celebrate their classic vehicles in and around Gore.

The Mopar Rally was this year hosted by Gore.

The name originally came from an American car parts, service and customer care organisation, but has since broadened to include any Chrysler-built vehicle.

Administrator of Mopar South Sarah Arnold said plenty of power was on display as car enthusiasts celebrated the long weekend with a few long drives and the show at the Gore A & P Showgrounds.

"It’s been brilliant; we’ve had two runs this weekend. It was the 170km run, we made maps so people knew where to go, which started in Riversdale and went around the Hokonui hills.

"Today’s cruise was a figure eight through Mataura, Wyndham, Edendale, and then back here at the show," she said yesterday.

This year had the highest number of registrations and cars rocking up for the drive and the show.

"[We had] 203 cars registered for the event, but when we rocked up this morning there were a few that hadn’t registered but were there.

"Goodness knows what the total number of cars is," she said.

The Mopar Rally was always a fantastic time for everyone involved, for people to get together and get their automobile fix.

"Seeing people pull out their chairs, talking about their cars, there’s an atmosphere to these events.

"It doesn’t matter what your car is, how old, how new, so long as it’s a Mopar and it’s a fabulous atmosphere."

There was dinner and awards scheduled last night, but Mrs Arnold said it was tough to pick just one to be the ultimate.

"There are so many that deserve recognition. They might be original, a project that’s taken many years, so many reasons why a car deserves to be most remarkable.

"I couldn’t name just one out of all of these."

Organiser of the rally Steve Barclay said it was no surprise there was a massive amount of cars entered and on display.

"Classic cars are like a cult in Southland. The most cars we had entered, from a town point of view, was from Gore.

"It’s called the Valiant capital of New Zealand."

Mr Barclay said the classic car was always something to be cherished through the years, passed along from old to young.

"We had cars that were our daily driver when I was young, and now they’re showpieces. We have friends who we hung around with, now their kids have Valiants, it’s generational.

"They can take away the centre parks, but they can’t take away our Valiants," he said.
