An Invercargill woman known as the "queen of cheese roll" has been recognised for her hard work with charities.

Kathryn Sansom was this week’s recipient of ASB’s Good As Gold — a segment on TVNZ1’s Seven Sharp which celebrates New Zealanders doing great things in their communities.

She received $10,000 as part of the recognition.

Ms Sansom is the leader of kea and cub scouts, working tirelessly on fundraising.

She also juggles this with a home-based childcare service during the day and the care of five children.

She has also fostered 28 children.

Ms Sansom was nominated for the segment by Adam Love, who said he did not know her really well but was impressed with her passion and work for fundraising.

He met her when they — along with other people — made 36,000 cheese rolls for a local scout fundraiser at her house.

"Kathryn is not someone who you say ‘no’ to, but you don’t want to say ‘no’," he said.

Mr Love said Ms Sansom must put in 40 to 50 hours per week for volunteering alone and nothing held her back from helping people.

Ms Sansom told Seven Sharp she was blown away with such recognition, and spoke about her passion for the scout group.

"It just does so much for the youth.

"You watch some of the children coming in who just haven’t experienced a lot of stuff, and watch them grow through it and come to the other end and just become different children," she said.

"It is just awesome."

She joked many people told her to rest, go somewhere such as the Cook Islands to lay down on the beach.

"I can’t imagine doing that — just sitting and doing nothing."
