Gore District Library staff met police and the Hokonui Rūnanga for an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss the antisocial behaviour of youth in Mataura.

Library manager Emma Sherie said the emergency meeting was well attended.

"It was a really productive meeting with some really good outcomes.

"What quickly became clear is that there are many layers to this issue that can't be solved with one single solution."

The Mataura community will continue discussions about a more permanent solution in the coming week.

"It is a community issue, and one which I’m delighted to say an entire community has put its hands up to solve," Ms Sherie said.

Ms Sherie made the decision to reduce opening hours to 2.30pm last Monday.

"Obviously that is not ideal.

"We want libraries to be places where people can hang out and connect.

"But we also want those people to feel welcome and safe when they do."

Gore District Council Mataura ward Neville Phillips said the reduced hours had helped limit the anti-social behaviour, but it was only a temporary solution.

"It’s just calmed things down for a little bit," he said.

Mr Phillips said it was "disappointing" to have to close the library early.

"But the reason why we're working hard is to get the normality back and where residents can feel safe in our library and service centre as quickly as possible."

He said to expect more details on how they plan to move forward by the end of next week.
