Demand has been strong at calf sales in the South. Shawn McAvinue took photographs at the Palmerston second calf sale on Friday last week. Online auction platform Bidr shows top prices in Palmerston included 15 Simmental steers selling for $1590 each, or $5.25 per kg and 64 Angus steers selling for $995 each, or $5.78 per kg. On the same day, the prices fetched at the Castlerock second calf sale in Northern Southland included a pen of 14 Charolais steers selling for $1615 each, or $4.89 per kg and 62 Angus cross steers selling for $1130 each,or $5.68 per kg.
Earlier in the week, top prices at Oamaru Calf Sale at Waiareka Saleyards included 20 Angus steers selling for $1530 each or $4.83 per kg, 14 Angus and Hereford cross steers selling for $1150 each, or $5.81 per kg, eight Hereford bulls selling for $1090 per head or $6.49 per kg and 11 Charolais cross heifers selling for $1335 each or $4.57 per kg.
