Buyers came from across New Zealand to bid on black at the 23rd annual Fossil Creek Angus bull sale in North Otago last week.

Stud co-owner Blair Smith said 75 bulls were on offer and 70 sold for an average of $8920.

Bull Fossil Creek Skecher S293 sold for the top price of $19,000 to a buyer from Danseys Pass.

He was delighted the bench of buyers at the sale in Five Forks included farmers from Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, the Deep South and the north of the South Island.

Stud co-owner Jane Smith said she was pleased there were bulls available for everybody.

"Everyone went home happy with the bulls that they had purchased."

She thanked their team and helpers on the day who gave up their time, including a contingent of Waitaki Boy's High School agriculture pupils.

The boys were well-versed in farming knowledge through their school farm, Fraser Farm.

"Our annual sale is a great opportunity for the rural community to get together, and we are passionate about making it a great event and showcasing the hard work that has gone into selecting our genetics during the year."

A highlight at Fossil Creek had been the launch of the E-Star bull indexes this year, which stud co-owner Neil Sanderson had help develop.

There were now five Angus studs in New Zealand using the indexes and the number involved would increase in the next 12 months, Mrs Smith said.
