Work starts on Macraes mine road

Earthworks started yesterday at Macraes mine to establish a road to access the underground mine after a massive slip at the weekend.

Oceana Gold said in a statement yesterday it expected to resume production from its underground operation by the end of the week.

The mine itself was not affected by the slip.

''The processing of ore has been unaffected and ore is being drawn from stockpiles. The company expects there to be only minimal impact on near-term production as a result of this event.''

The failure of part of the west wall happened on Saturday after heavy rain.

Worksafe New Zealand said yesterday it was yet to decide whether to launch a full investigation into the incident.

A spokesman for the safety authority said when contacted it had issued two prohibition notices relating to safely clearing the access road and an improvement notice about ground movement alerts.

''The improvement notice has directed the miners to refine their trigger action response plan for future ground movement alerts.''

Oceana Gold officials could not be contacted for further comment. The Macraes open pit is New Zealand's largest gold mine.
