At the meeting of the West Otago Community Board in Tapanui on Wednesday, the board was told several trees at the Bushyhill Playground were decaying and were considered to be unsafe.
Board member Sue Wink said if the trees were unsafe, then all of them should be cut down.
Council communications co-ordinator Jamie Shaw said staff and an arborist inspected the trees at the playground in May following a service request about the trees overhanging a neighbouring property.
''As well as overhanging into a neighbouring property and beginning to obstruct power lines, three of the trees have split fork junctions which creates a weakness in the structure of the tree, as well as a base for rot to set in, and makes them at risk of falling over in adverse weather.''
A report tabled at the meeting stated removing the trees would be more cost effective in the long term due to their condition, age and ongoing issues with dead wood.
All of the trees will be removed and an appropriate species planted further back from the fence line.
The council has yet to obtain a price for the removal, but estimates it would cost around $280 per tree for replanting. The board approved the trees' removal.
