Plan to double size of Okuru approved

A 47-lot subdivision at Okuru, Haast, has been approved but developer Infinity Ltd will not begin construction until at least a quarter of the sections have been sold.

The Westland District Council confirmed this week it had not received any notices of appeal when the period for appealing the consent passed on July 31.

The consent was granted by independent commissioners Bryce Thomson and Michael Parker on July 8.

The 11.2ha subdivision is conditional on the developer extending the protective 700m Okuru sea wall by another 600m.

That will involve the reclamation of 2ha of land.

The subdivision owner is MTP Ltd, associated with helicopter pilots Toby Wallis, of Wanaka, and Pul Horrell, of Queenstown.

The company has contracted Wanaka development company Infinity Ltd to assist with the subdivision plan, including marketing it.

Mr Wallis said when contacted this week he was pleased the subdivision could now go ahead but referred all further questions to Infinity Ltd.

When the application was filed last year it drew almost equal opposition and support from Haast landowners and residents.

There were 19 opposers, 21 supporters and four neutral submitters, with the bulk of the opposition focusing on the scale of the development and fears it would disturb the peaceful "last frontier" culture of Haast.

The proposal will more than double the size of Okuru, which presently has about 30 houses.

It is the biggest development proposal in South Westland since the 1960s.

Infinity general manager Mark Bretherton said this week he believed many opposers' concerns had been addressed in plan amendments produced in May.

The sewer system had been revised to meet Westland Regional Council concerns about protecting the sensitive coastal environment.

There had been another change to the legal mechanism providing public access.

The changes were not fundamental to the layout and did not change public access itself, he said.
