Police are urging motorists to slow down and obey the temporary speed limits at several road works sites on State Highway 6 between Fox Glacier and Haast Pass, following two crashes in loose gravel in the past few days.

Haast Senior Constable Paul Gurney said three people were lucky not to be injured when the driver lost control of their vehicle while travelling fast on a newly sealed section of road at Haast Pass, late at night.

The car hit a bank and rolled.

Earlier this week, a driver lost control in a road works area at Bruce Bay.

The car crashed into a deep pond and hit a power pole.

Mr Gurney said the driver avoided injury but the car and most of the gear inside was written off due to water damage.

He said there were many road works sites throughout South Westland repairing damage from recent storms.

He believed both recent crashes were a ''direct result of not slowing down and subsequently losing control in gravel.''
