Worker seriously hurt attending to power fault

An Aurora contractor has been transported to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition and WorkSafe notified after a workplace incident during a power outage in Wanaka.

Aurora Energy operations and network performance general manager Matt Settle confirmed a contractor was injured while attending to an electrical fault in Beacon Point Rd, in Wanaka, on Wednesday night.

WorkSafe was notified by the contractor shortly after the incident and a joint investigation was under way, Mr Settle said.

Work was being done in the area to upgrade the electricity network but several unrelated faults had resulted in unplanned power outages at various times on Wednesday night.

A fault with a transformer in Wanaka caused a power cut for multiple customers, he said.

Power was restored to the area about 3.30pm yesterday.

A St John spokeswoman said St John was called to Wednesday’s incident about 10.15pm.

One ambulance and one helicopter attended, she said.

One patient was treated at the scene then taken to Dunstan Hospital and airlifted to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition.

A police spokeswoman said they were advised by Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) of an incident involving some powerlines.

There were no road closures and the incident was not being treated as suspicious, she said.

A Fenz spokesman said one crew from Wanaka attended and assisted St John at the scene, but he would not comment further due to the incident being coded as a medical event.

WorkSafe confirmed it was making inquiries.
