Wanaka Community Hub opens

The $3.8 million Wanaka Community Hub building was officially opened on Saturday.

Sir Tim Wallis (above) cut the ribbon across the front door and unveiled a plaque inside.

He referred to the "rocky" road the project had negotiated and he acknowledged that in its early days he had been advised to oppose construction of the building but decided it was a facility Wanaka needed and he had given his full support.

The hub, next to the St Columba's Anglican Church, in McDougall St, brought objections from those concerned it was being built in a residential area.

It will house community and government services and also provides space for performances and the display of art work.

Hundreds of supporters turned out for the opening ceremony.

Wanaka Community House Trust chairwoman Dame Sukhi Turner said another $700,000 of funding was still required but plans were in place to cover the shortfall.
