Dozens of Upper Clutha residents reported hearing a mysterious ''big bang'' about 9.15pm yesterday.
One person posting on Facebook said her house shook and it ''felt like someone smashed into the garage door''.
Another thought there was a problem with their chimney.
The reports were mainly from Wanaka, Hawea and Makarora but there were also some from Cromwell and Winton.
Wanaka police said they had had no reports related to the incident.
Various comments suggested the cause was likely to have been a meteor.
