Members of the Wanaka Community House Charitable Trust (from left) Cholena Perry, Dame Sukhi Turner (chairwoman), Yeverley McCarthy, and Nick Brown celebrated yesterday, along with other colleagues and supporters, the end of the long and expensive process of gaining resource consent from the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

Dame Sukhi said the project was now "free to fly''.

The trust was granted consent a fortnight ago and earlier this week learnt the appeal period ended with no appeals.

Dame Sukhi said the trust could now turn its attention to developing plans for the building and raising the $3 million or more required to build it.

The Anglican Church has provided the trust with land in McDougall St next to St Columba's Anglican Church.

It plans to build a hall, office and meeting space for use by community organisations.

Dame Sukhi said she hoped the community house would be ready to open in 2018.
