The water flowing from Wanaka’s community spring in Lakeside Rd is safe to drink, matching the quality of  Lake Wanaka’s water.

Community group Touchstone decided to have the spring water tested because the   spring has become popular with people wanting to fill water bottles.

Touchstone project manager Chris Arbuckle said  the water was tested  on January 12.

"We had noticed a lot of community concern as the springs flows had reduced significantly after the de-watering of a nearby development. There were also concerns raised about bacterial (E.coli) contamination of the spring last year, but sampling showed this was for the moment unfounded.

"The water is as clean as the lake. It’s groundwater, so it’s generally cleaner anyway."

The land development, Marina Tce, has been prone to controversy since work began on the site early last year.

In September, a landslip  on the site blocked Lakeside Rd.

Mr Arbuckle said issues with the spring’s flow had only begun since the site started de-watering.

"It’s just a big sponge under there [the site], so as soon as you suck water out of there, it dries up over here [the spring].

"Now and again when we have really low rainfall, the groundwater resources reduce as well. A whole lot of things could be doing it [reducing the spring flow], but it was going fine until they [the developers] started playing around with that [the site]."

Mr Arbuckle said Touchstone had been monitoring the outflow of water from the site and noted it had "quintupled" since the de-watering began.

Despite being positive, Touchstone’s results were unofficial and people were reminded to drink the water at their own risk.

However, Mr Arbuckle said people should not be worried.

"I stop at the spring to fill up my drink bottle nearly every day on my bike ride. I would not drink it if I thought it was questionable, and now we know a bit more about its quality."
