Wanaka design engineer Eddie Spearing has announced he will run in the council's by-election against former councillor Jude Battson and Wanaka Community Board member Quentin Smith.
The 54-year old father of two has lived in the Upper Clutha since moving to New Zealand from the United Kingdom and is a New Zealand citizen.
Although he had no local body experience, Mr Spearing said he had served as the chairman of Kahu Youth and is the president of the Wanaka Swim Club. He is also co-organiser of the annual Ruby Island Swim race.
If elected, Mr Spearing said his role would be to continue work the council was already doing, but he would like to see more focus on youth and business issues in Wanaka.
