Snow sets Cardrona up for opening day

A dump of snow has come right on time for Cardrona Alpine Resort, which is gearing up for its opening day of the ski season tomorrow.

Jen Houltham, from Cardrona, said with more wild weather forecast, the skifield was opening the beginners' area only.

"We're aiming to open McDougall's after the storm passes, later next week," she said.

"With a decent dump of snow and more on the way, a film launch, and opening day tomorrow, it's been a fun week for our team.

"Our Base Area cafés will be open for treats, coffee and lunch. Because of nationwide hospitality staff shortages, our food and beverage offering will look quite different this year... but it'll still be delicious."

The resort has received about 31cm of snow over the past 48 hours.

The opening comes amid a barrage of weather fronts hitting the whole country, expected to bring storms, gales and low snow over coming days.

MetService has issued a raft of weather warnings, including road warnings for southern highways, and heavy snow watches for parts of Otago and Southland.
