Site preparation for the construction of a new two-storey classroom block at Mount Aspiring College has begun.

Principal Nicola Jacobsen said the redevelopment of the site meant the school would be able to cater for up to 1600 pupils, up from the present roll of 1150.

"We are grateful for the Ministry of Education support in this, and the work that has been done by staff, the community and the board of trustees to get this project under way," Ms Jacobsen said.

When completed the building will contain the equivalent of 28 teaching spaces, including a small theatre, technology learning spaces and music practice rooms.

"It will be a world-class learning environment for students and the community," Ms Jacobsen said.
