School board not 'blank slate'

The members of the establishment board of trustees of the new primary school in Wanaka are not starting with a ''blank slate''.

That assurance was given by the board's new chairman, Dr Ian Hall, after the board's first formal meeting last week.

He said one of the prime functions of the new primary school's board was to undertake public consultation but ''quite a bit'' had already been done ''around the establishment of the new school and whether it should be a standalone school or whether it should have one board of trustees for the two schools [including the existing Wanaka Primary School]''.

''We've got quite a lot of information that was collected from the previous consultation and all of that is being made available to the establishment board.''

Dr Hall said the community would be consulted again.

''We're just not at that point yet.

''There's no point in consulting until we've got something that's worth consulting about, and that's likely to be at some point during term three.''

Asked about how innovative the board could be, Dr Hall said different people had different ideas about what was innovative and what was not.

The new school's board would be looking at schools in Queenstown, Cromwell and possibly Christchurch ''so we can become familiar with what is seen to be good practice and consult with principals and teachers who are working in new or remodelled schools''.

Dr Hall was principal of Otago Polytechnic between 1985 and 1992 and the Christchurch College of Education between 1996 and 2004.

The other members of the board are Amy Watson, Jude MacArthur, Gena Bagley and Anna Roseingrave.

The new school, called by the Ministry of Education Wanaka South Primary, will initially cater for 400 pupils.

The new school is due to open in 2020.
