The conditions were set by independent commissioners Jane Taylor and Andrew Henderson following a Queenstown Lakes District Council hearing in March. They relate to the company’s property in Brownston, McDougall and Upton Sts, on land zoned low-density residential.
The company, whose sole director is Duffy Krook, argues the commissioners erred by considering the function centre to be a commercial activity rather than visitor accommodation under the district plan.
It is seeking increased operating hours, an increase in the number of non in-house guests that can be catered for, and a change in the limit on the use of first floor decks.
Brigitte Barker, of Geraldine, whose family had owned a holiday house near the centre for 10 years, said yesterday her family would oppose the measures being sought by Varina.
‘‘Local residents are concerned about noise control, alcohol abuse, parking and general disruptive behaviour that will have a profound effect on their neighbourhood.
‘‘Wanaka residents in general should be concerned that if the Environment Court consents to this appeal, no area of Wanaka will be safely residential.’’
The family is representing 25 residents opposed to Varina’s resource consent application who were keen to ensure conditions were not ‘‘softened’’.
The appeal is to be heard on September 29.
