A woman lost on a track near Wanaka used the last remaining battery on her cellphone to call for help.
A police spokeswoman said the ‘‘backpacker’’ made contact with police about 7pm on Friday. The woman, who was distressed and wearing only light clothing, described her approximate location before her phone battery died.
Wanaka police responded quickly and soon found the woman and brought her off the track safely.
Police were keen to use the incident as a reminder for people to be prepared when venturing out into the wilderness.
"Anyone going hiking should ensure they have appropriate clothing and food, means of communication and the necessary equipment on them.
"If you’re relying on a cellphone for communication, please ensure it is charged enough and you’ll have reception."
Carrying a portable recharger was also good idea.
People should also seek local knowledge, plan their route and determine how long they could expect it to take.
"Tell someone your plans and leave a time and date to raise the alarm if you haven’t returned."
