Party on but snow might not turn up

The Cardrona Alpine Resort will open for its winter season on Saturday, but how much snow there will be remains an open question.

While there has been plenty of precipitation this week, warm temperatures meant it is falling as rain rather than snow.

Webcams on the mountain yesterday showed more green than white at Cardrona’s main basin (pictured) and on the Captain’s Run.

Resort general manager Bridget Legnavsky said yesterday conditions were ‘‘damp’’ and warm, but colder weather was expected on Wednesday and Thursday.

The resort would have a ‘‘low-key’’ opening on Saturday, even if there was only snow around the learners’ area.

Ms Legnavsky said the resort was ‘‘poised and ready’’ for its traditional ski season start on June 15, but it was too early for weather forecasts to indicate what snow there might be.

Last year, an early dump of snow allowed part of the field to open for a weekend ‘‘teaser’’ in late May.
