The pair, driving their 1298cc Suzuki Jimney 4WD, completed the 15,158km drive in 40 days.
Mr Sherwin said in an email this week they were fortunate to make it to the end after hitting a 1.5m mound of dirt across the road, at 70kmh-80kmh, in the dark.
"We surveyed the damage to our Jimney front axle. The diff had been forced backwards and upwards — it looked like a banana. Both front wheels were leaning inwards. After seven hours of working on the Jimney, we managed to get it driveable although not legal. So we limped 1200km to the finish line. So relieved to have made it at all."
Mr Sherwin, originally from Oamaru, and Mr Ford were raising funds for the Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust.
