The installation of a roundabout at the intersection of State Highways 6 and 84 just outside Wanaka is not a priority, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) says.

The intersection serves as the main arterial route from Wanaka to Albert Town and Hawea and has become a subject of concern among the Upper Clutha community, as traffic continues to increase.

Riverbank Rd, a popular route through to Wanaka's industrial area and the Crown Range Rd, also connects with the intersection, but is unaligned with SH6.

Last Sunday, a Facebook post calling for something to be done about the "dangerous" intersection received nearly 100 likes and dozens of replies.

The original poster, Karen McLeod, of Wanaka, told the Otago Daily Times yesterday it was time for NZTA to "take some responsibility".

She believed people were "passionate and angry" about the situation, and was concerned no action would be taken until there was a fatal crash at the intersection.

Snr Sgt Allan Grindell said the issue had been discussed in the past and police had attended crashes this year.

"We do attend the odd crash there, that's no secret ... the intersection clearly has engineering issues," he said.

He believed lowering the speed limit through the intersection could be a viable short-term solution.

"The lower the speed of vehicles, the more opportunity people have to see other vehicles and the more opportunity they have to stop."

While small changes could be made, NZTA senior safety engineer Roy Johnston ruled out any major work being done.

"While it is recognised that this intersection would function better if it was aligned with Riverbank Rd and converted to a roundabout, the safety risks at the intersection are lower than those at other higher risk intersections which have been prioritised for improvement," he said.

Mr Johnston said the NZTA would continue to monitor the situation and the intersection would be "assessed for further work" by the Wanaka to Luggate "safer corridor" project.

"There is a plan for the Queenstown Lakes District Council to undertake some work in conjunction with the NZ Transport Agency to identify issues and priorities for the Wanaka area and we expect that this intersection will be considered as part of this work," Mr Johnston said.

Council spokesman Jimmy Sygrove said work at the intersection could be identified as part of the Wanaka transport masterplan, and the speed limit could be reduced following the review of the speed limit bylaw due this year.
