Shopping runs for Lake Hāwea residents will become much shorter following the opening of a new supermarket in the town next month.

Fresh Choice Lake Hāwea, situated between Parry Cres and Bodkin St, will open its doors to the public on October 22, developer and Project H director Ray Macleod said.

"All the refrigeration units are in, all the ceiling’s in, so it’s a great big empty space.

"We’re all ready to go."

He said a partial handover of the retail area of the supermarket from Breen Construction to Woolworths would take place today.

The development, which began construction last September, also incorporates space for additional commercial tenants.

"So we’ve got a gymnasium going upstairs and a consultancy company going into the office space on the Eastern end, so it’s all fully let."

A Lake Hāwea resident himself, Mr Macleod said everyone involved in the project was "pretty excited" to be bringing such a major service location to the rapidly growing town.

"I’m showing my age here but I also went to the opening of the new pub in 1982.

"Essentially we’ve had all these people put new houses in but no-one’s thought about services to the public."
