Nasa has cancelled its planned launch from Wanaka Airport of a super pressure balloon next month.

Associate chief, office of communications Jeremy Eggers said in a statement a short time ago Nasa recognised the current uncertainty over Covid-19.

''One of the best means for being protective of its workforce is to practice social distancing.''

Nasa had already limited all international travel to only that which is ''mission critical''.

Mr Eggers said Nasa recognised and respected the measures the New Zealand Government was implementing.

''Taken on the whole, Nasa has decided to cancel the campaign.''
