Man charged over child porn

A Wanaka man has been charged with possession of child pornography.

The man, who has interim name suppression, appeared in Queenstown District Court yesterday and was remanded on bail without plea.

He has been charged with possession of objectionable publications; 30 jpg images showing young girls and boys naked and/or engaged in sexual acts.

The charges, under the 1993 Films, Videos & Publications Classification Act 1993, each carry a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of up to $50,000.

All 30 charges date back to August 23, 2016, but this was his first appearance in court.

He was remanded on bail until July 10 with conditions, so that he can appoint a lawyer.

The conditions of his bail are that he is not to be alone in the company of anyone under 16, must surrender his passport, and live at his home address.
