Man arrested, warned after parking officer abused

A Wanaka man was arrested for abusing a parking officer at the weekend.

Police were called to Ardmore St on Saturday after the man verbally abused a Queenstown Lakes District Council parking warden.

Senior Constable Ian Henderson of Wanaka said nobody had the right to abuse a parking officer for doing their job.

''If you let them do their job, then you might find it easier to find a park.''

''The 30-minute parks are not for 30 days.''

A police media spokeswoman said the man was later released with a pre-charge warning.

QLDC regulatory manager Lee Webster said while incidents like this were rare, there had been instances in the past where parking officers had contacted the police after being abused.

All parking officers and QLDC regulatory staff were trained in conflict resolution, Mr Webster said.

The Wanaka enforcement officer was still working.

Any council officer involved in an abusive encounter was encouraged to report it to their manager and the police, Mr Webster said. In the past year the council had increased its focus on parking enforcement in Wanaka and more enforcement officers were now employed in the town.
