The video is set to launch today and there are hopes it will be a prevention tool to keep incidents to a minimum in the resort town.
Thousands of teenagers from the South, including an increasing number from Canterbury, have headed for the resort over the New Year period, leading to increased worries about underage drinking and unruly behaviour.
The video features interviews with several Wanaka businesses, Sir Steve and Christchurch Boys’ High School year 13 dean Wayne Waller. Sir Steve has a house in Wanaka and spends a lot of time in the town.
The video was to be distributed to youth groups and schools in Christchurch.
"One of the key topics of conversation is providing a safe New Year’s Eve environment for all residents and visitors to enjoy," Mr Telfer said.
"We appreciate the planning and resources the police are putting into this period of the holiday season."
Senior Sergeant Chris Brooks briefed the board at a workshop last Thursday.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council events team continued to play an important part in New Year’s Eve events in Wanaka, ensuring there was a good focal point of entertainment down on the lakefront, he said.
"Safety is families and our young people being able to enjoy a night of celebration with everybody being respectful and looking out for each other."
In the video, Sir Steve talks about the need to respect the town and its residents. He played for Canterbury and was involved in coaching Canterbury and the Crusaders before he moved into international rugby.
The video said New Year’s festivities involved being wise when drinking.
