Groups set to have say on airport

Airport development is not on the agenda of this afternoon's Queenstown Lakes District Council monthly meeting, but it will still be the hot topic for discussion.

Those opposed to expansion of Queenstown and Wanaka Airports are lining up to take advantage of the 30 minutes of public forum speaking time at the start of the meeting.

They include representatives from the newly formed group of four Upper Clutha community associations, and the vocal Wanaka Stakeholders and Queenstown Flightplan 2050 groups.

New deputy chairman of the Stakeholders group Mark Sinclair said he would spell out to councillors the make-up of the group's 2000 members.

''You shouldn't make any assumptions about who is or isn't in our membership.

''It is not a bunch of angry people with nothing to do.

''We're not driven by anger. We're driven by reasonableness and we're looking for the council to be reasonable and transparent in its consultation, which it hasn't been.''

Mr Sinclair said councillors would realise they were ''not just dealing with a handful of people who object to the way they are doing things''.

''They're dealing with a really significant proportion of the population of the Upper Clutha.''

The Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC), majority-owned by the council, is proposing to spend up to $400million over the next 25 years developing Wanaka Airport for commercial flights.

It is due to release its master plan for public discussion early next year.

Flightplan 2050 member John Hilhorst will press the council for answers on its ''statement of intent'' in respect of the airport corporation.

The group wants councillors to acknowledge decisions over airport expansion are their responsibility, not the QAC's.

Asked to respond to criticism the council was not providing sufficient consultation, a representative said the council ''encourages everyone to participate in the QAC consultation processes''.

''Community input to master-planning work will be hugely important in shaping future plans for the airport.

''Whether people choose to participate individually or as part of a group, the important thing is that they do engage in the process.''
