Hundreds of Upper Clutha primary school children descended on the Junior Challenge course in Wanaka yesterday, cheered on by large crowds of parents, grandparents, volunteers and other spectators.

Sections of Ardmore St, Pembroke Park and the Wanaka lakefront were closed for the Challenge Wanaka Festival event.

It provided sprint duathlons and triathlons for years 1-6 pupils as well as a mini-challenge for under-5s — comprising a scooter or bike ride, a waterslide and then the option of a run, walk or dance to the finish line.

All children received a medal and certificate.
