Today, Good Friday is practice day for the pilots taking part in the Warbirds Over Wanaka Airshow.

Currently, helicopters are flying backwards in formation next to the main stand, Harvards have been making low and slow passes, and there have been loud noises and flashes of entertainment from the pyrotechnics team.

Yesterday an F-16 screamed over Wanaka, with one onlooker saying it was so loud it "shook the hills". The F-16 display is back on today and set for 1.30pm.

Thousands of spectators are also practising at gazing skyward, queuing for coffee, peering into aircraft cockpits, eating pies and taking selfies with planes.

So far, as of morning tea time, everything appears to be running as smoothly as the big 1917 Waterloo Charboy stationary  engine rescued from a shearing shed and greeting spectators with a cloud of oily fumes at the entrance to the show.

Tomorrow and Sunday are the main show days when the stars, such as two F-16 fighters, come out to play in the skies over Wanaka Airport.

The weather today is fine, warm and calm with some cloud.

There is a suggestion of rain tomorrow and even a touch of snow on the mountains.

Should the F-16 pilots become unavailable to do the fly over at Wanaka, I would like to volunteer my services to fly one of them .... that would be serious fun 8-)
