Extra police to help catch drink-drivers

Wanaka police will bring in ''reinforcements'' to help curb drink-driving in the town.

Two weeks ago, the police challenged Upper Clutha drivers to try to go a week without a drink-driving incident.

Since then, there have been six drink-driving offences, including three in one night.

Senior Constable Darren Cranfield, of Wanaka, said it seemed the message police had pushed in the past month had not registered with some in the community, so reinforcements would be called in to help address the problem.

If that did not make people think twice about drink-driving, then nothing would, he said.

''So if you get caught after this forewarning, your elevator isn't going all the way to the top,'' he said.

A gradual increase in the number of drink-driving offences in the area had made it the top priority law enforcement issue in Wanaka.

Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell, of Wanaka, said the reinforcements would be extra roading police but there was no specific date set or police operation organised.

''It's just a continuation of what we have been saying for a while now and we're not out to trick anybody. We're being open about it, but the problem continues.''

The focus would continue until the message got through to everyone, Snr Sgt Grindell.

Police would continue to focus on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday mornings, as that was when the majority of the drink-driving offending occurred, but police would also be out on other days trying to catch those who continued to break the law, he said.

''What was that old saying: anywhere and anytime. Sometime in the near future we will be bringing in some extra roading staff to help tackle the issue.''
