Deputy Chief Fire Officer and team manager Tony Wellman said the team of six was hoping to receive sponsorship for a new team uniform. He said three sponsors were already lined up, which "sets us on our way".
The brigade has had a team in the championships for the past three years, since first competing in Cromwell in 2015, and made the national finals in New Plymouth last year.
Now, the team has set its sights on winning the national title and competing in the Australasian championships later this year.
"We’re always setting our sights on improving. This year we’re definitely setting higher goals, it’s good to get your name up there," Mr Wellman said.
He described the competition scenario as "the worst car crash you could ever go to" and teams were judged by their response plans, leadership and efficient rescue of the patient.
Mr Wellman said the knowledge the team brought back to the brigade had made a big difference in everyday response situations.
"It’s taken the brigade up quite a few steps, so at a car accident now it’s a lot more efficient, a lot safer with better patient care, and our plans are way better. It’s helped us a lot in terms of preparation."
The North and South Island regional championships are held on May 24 at Feilding, while the nationals are at Inglewood, Taranaki, on June 21.
