The closures will occur in two four-hour slots next Thursday.
People using the Haast Pass South Westland route between Makarora in Otago and Haast township in South Westland will need to factor the lengthy delays into their travel times, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said in a media release yesterday.
The substantial maintenance repairs include a new concrete dish channel, new handrails and posts and resurfaced bridge approaches.
The bridge will be open before 8am, for one hour from noon to 1pm and after 5pm.
The work is weather dependent, so if it is wet it may be pushed to the next dry day. The maintenance needs to be completed before winter.
Electronic signs in key towns will confirm the closures at either side of the bridge.
