Details of the America's Cup's visit to Queenstown and Wanaka next month have been revealed.
Queenstown Lakes sailing fans will have the chance to see the ``Auld Mug'' when it makes an appearance at the Wanaka Yacht Club and the Wakatipu Yacht Club on October 16.
Both clubs will be hosting open days so the public can see the cup and talk to the Team New Zealand crew travelling with the famous yachting trophy.
Wanaka Yacht Club commodore Jeff Mercer said the event would provide a rare opportunity to view the cup. The visit to Wanaka would be the cup's first.
``We feel very privileged that Team New Zealand and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron are bringing the cup to a small town like Wanaka.''
The cup would also be at Mount Aspiring College before being taken to the yacht club on Lakeside Rd from noon to 2pm.
Aside from letting people see the cup, the visit was also a chance to thank the club's sponsors and give the younger sailors a glimpse of what was possible in the sport.
``We put a lot of consideration into our youth sailing programme and getting the America's Cup here is extremely important to our young sailors and our sponsors.''
People would also be able to buy food from a food truck at the club, so they could lunch with the cup.
After the Wanaka visit, the cup will be taken over the Crown Range to the Wakatipu Yacht Club, where it will be on display at the club's Kelvin Peninsula headquarters from 5pm to 7pm.
The club will hold an open day to coincide with the visit.
The cup will be taken to Invercargill the following day.
