Queenstown Lakes District Council regulatory manager Lee Webster said the council was obtaining quotes for options to repair the areas and make improvements but the cost to reinstate the grass and place rocks on the lakefront around the areas in question would be $2982 excluding GST.
He said parking enforcement officers were actively patrolling Wanaka over the holiday period.
"They have issued hundreds of tickets for parking offences, including parking on grass in non-designated areas and overstaying time-restricted parking between the normal 8am to 6pm hours," Mr Webster said.
"There was no distinction between residents and visitors when it came to the tickets issued."
Mr Webster said the situation on public holidays was slightly different because time-restricted parking was not enforceable.
QLDC maintained its 24/7 customer service over the Christmas-New Year period and parking enforcement officers were able to respond to calls and emails from the public even on public holidays, he said.
An estimated 35,000 people were in Wanaka last weekend. Traffic was reduced to a crawl on the town’s main thoroughfares and many drivers parked along the waterfront outside designated parking areas.
Some drivers had moved rocks blocking access to grassy areas in order to park their cars.
Mr Webster said "we will be reviewing all aspects of education and enforcement over the peak holiday period in due course."
"We encourage anyone to provide feedback by calling our Wanaka service team on (03) 443 0024 or emailing services@qldc.govt.nz," Mr Webster said.
