‘Amazing progress’ at Mount Aspiring College

Ministry of Education officials are delighted with progress on Mount Aspiring College’s $33.5 million building project.

College principal Nicola Jacobsen and board of trustees chairman Dr Ian Hall yesterday hosted the ministry’s head of property delivery Scott Evans, project delivery manager David Patterson, and Queenstown Lakes Mayor Jim Boult.

Up to 30 people were working on footings and precast panels yesterday, with as many as 85 workers expected on site when the project is in full swing.

Construction is being funded from the Government’s $1.3 billion National Schools Redevelopment Programme.

Ms Jacobsen said the roll of 1140 would increase by about 20 at the start of term three.

The school’s master plan provides scope for between 1600-1800 pupils.

"What we are noticing is pretty consistent growth through the year. I think it is because people are making the decision to move here," Ms Jacobsen said.

Mr Evans said the project had reached a key milestone and was going as expected.

"We are really excited about working with the school and getting to the stage where we are now. It is a really good stage," Mr Evans said.

Mr Boult said he was thrilled to see the project.

"It is indicative of the growth in the Upper Clutha that this school needs to be extended," he said.

Dr Hall said "amazing progress" was being made.

Mr Boland said the project was on deadline for completion in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The project was initiated several years ago under the watch of former principal Wayne Bosley and physical work started at the beginning of this year.

The new buildings would house drama, music, a library, teaching, whare and administration spaces.
