MetService meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane said a front was forecast to move north over the lower South Island tomorrow, then weaken on Thursday.
The front was expected to bring rain to most of the lower South Island and it was likely that warning amounts of rain would fall about Fiordland (north of Doubtful Sound), where a warning was now in force, she said.
There was also a strong possibility of warning amounts of rain about Southland tomorrow and Westland (south of Otira) tomorrow and on Thursday, and there was a possibility of heavy rain around East Otago on Thursday.
Over the two-day period, snow and sleet were expected to fall about the Central Otago and Canterbury high country, she said."Fortunately, the snow does not look like it will fall as low as last week, but it will still be enough to make the temperatures drop again.
"Mountainous areas will probably get a dusting, but there is still a bit of uncertainty as to how much snow there will be at lower levels."
Temperatures were expected to drop to about 1degC overnight and reach about 10degC to 11degC during the day tomorrow and on Thursday.
Another front was expected to pass over the South Island over the weekend, bringing more snow. But again, how much and how low it would go, had not yet been determined.
"At this point, we’re not including snow in any of our more populated area forecasts, but that may change and people should keep up to date with the latest weather forecast."
However, 2-4cm of snow is expected to fall above 800m on the Crown Range Rd Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
