People are being warned to stay away from a smelly stagnant pool of water in Moeraki while the Waitaki District Council gets rid of it.
The water is on the seaward side of Haven St in Moeraki and stretches about 75m east from David St.
Council roading engineer, Hugh Francklin strongly advised people to stay away.
Signs had been erected to keep people away from the pool and the work.
Mr Francklin said the work had been recommended by a geotechnical specialist to help prevent further ground movement and slipping in the Haven St area. The natural watercourse that runs through the area had been deepened by contractors to allow ongoing drainage.
Once the area at the base of the embankment below the road had been drained, it would be filled with soil and rock to prevent further instability.
