Finland citizen Hanni Hopsu said next Friday marks a year since Russia started its "aggressive invasion" of Ukraine.
She decided to do a fundraiser for Kiwi Kare — Kiwi Aid and Refugee Evacuation organisation — that operates in Ukraine providing food, sanitary products, medical supplies and helps people needing evacuation.
Ms Hopsu wanted to do something to support those fighting for their freedom in Europe and along with a Givealittle page, she would be spending 24 hours from 10am on Friday walking the Bluff Hill’s loop track to raise awareness about the ongoing war and the dire need for help, support and solidarity.
"As a Finn, the war in Ukraine touches me a lot as my great grandparents went through what Ukraine is going through now.
"Independence in Finland is not taken for granted yet the war in Ukraine has made us appreciate it even more and truly brought it home how valuable independence, freedom and democracy really are."
"As a student I have no budget to spend on this fundraiser — I really wanted to do something to help but can’t afford to donate much so decided to get people together as together we can always do so much more," Ms Hopsu said.
A keen tramper, she believed the biggest challenge would be sleep deprivation but she hoped people would come along during the day to walk with her and support the cause.
"There is an open invitation for anyone to come and join me for a lap.
"All people of different levels of fitness are warmly welcomed as long as able to complete the track — which takes approximately two hours [and] 30 minutes. Dressing in yellow and blue is encouraged!"
People who could donate were encouraged to do so through her Bluff Hill 24hr for Ukraine’s Givealittle page (https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/bluff-hill-24hr-for-ukraine#%21).
