With one week before nominations close, four candidates are lining up for the Invercargill City Council by-election.
Andrea Murrell is the latest candidate to join the race alongside Carl Heenan, David Hicks and Graham Lewis.
This would be the first time she was having a go, she said.
She came from Colombia to Southland 10 years ago and wanted to be a voice for immigrants and women at the council table, she said.
Council deputy electoral officer and manager of governance and legal Michael Morris said on Tuesday there was often a late surge in nominations.
The council would hold a Facebook Live presentation today to help demystify the nomination process.
Prospective candidates have until noon on June 8 for nominations.
Voting opens on July 13 and election day is August 4.
