The discovery of an envelope containing white powder led to a lockdown at Invercargill Prison this morning.

Emergency services were called to the the prison after a staff member opened the envelope, which was found in the administration block, about 8.30am.

There was no danger to staff, the public or prisoners, but three staff members were required to undergo decontamination, police said.

Environment Southland staff attended to monitor the decontamination process.

The administration block, which is a separate from the prison itself, was soon cleared and staff were able to return to work.

The substance, which has not been identified, will be sent to police forensics for investigation.
