Voting system to remain

The voting system for the 2025 local body election in Invercargill will remain unchanged as councillors have voted to maintain the status quo.

A final vote of six to three at yesterday’s Invercargill City Council meeting decided to maintain the city’s first-past-the-post (FPP) system as opposed to changing to the single-transferable-vote (STV) system.

Crs Darren Ludlow, Alex Crackett, and Lesley Soper voted against.

It was noted in a report presented to yesterday’s meeting that the community could demand a poll be held on this decision, which would be held after May 21 next year at a cost of about $125,000.
