Tourist charged over fatal campervan crash

A 43-year-old German man is due to appear in the Invercargill District Court tomorrow in relation to the fatal crash between a car and a campervan at Five Rivers in Northern Southland on Boxing Day.

Detective Sergeant John Kean, of Invercargill, said the man faced one charge of careless use of a motor vehicle causing death and two
charges of careless use of a motor vehicle causing injury.

A 22-year-old Chinese student was injured in the collision and died in Dunedin Hospital on Saturday afternoon.

Det Sgt Kean thanked the members of the public who helped the people injured in the crash.

"This was a difficult and traumatic situation and people showed considerable courage when going to those injured person's aid.''
