Pupils from around Southland were invited to test their chess abilities at the Invercargill junior and intermediate-senior regionals this week.

Some 120 pupils from years 1 to six who took part in the junior tournament.

Intermediate and senior graded players compete today at Southland Boys' High School.

The intermediate-senior regionals tournament is open to years 7 to 13.

Invercargill-Southland Chess Club co-founder Edward Lee said more than 220 people were expected to compete over the two days, a big increase from previous years.
