Forget garden gnomes. Owaka couple Judith and Graham Renwick have a garden full of teapots.

Mrs Renwick said the garden was started by Mr Renwick three years ago, when "he just decided he wanted a bit of a hobby," and had been steadily growing ever since.

The Renwicks had bought most of the teapots from second-hand shops, but other people had started adding to the garden recently, Mrs Renwick said.

Friends had given them teapots, and children sometimes asked if they could put a teapot or ornaments in the garden.

Mrs Renwick said her favourite teapot was the huge cream-coloured letterbox, which Mr Renwick's daughter, Heidi, gave to them.

She had no idea how many teapots were in the garden, and said the number was about to grow, with another two boxes that had been collected from second-hand shops to be added.

A teapot birdhouse is to be erected in the garden in the next three weeks.

"It's something interesting," Mrs Renwick said.
