The stadium board released a statement yesterday saying it had accepted his resignation. He would be retiring on medical grounds and for personal reasons with immediate effect, it said.
Chairman Alan Denis thanked Mr Skelt for his service to the facility.
“Nigel has contributed significantly to both the venue and the city in his tenure at ILT Stadium Southland.
"He was involved in setting the early vision of the stadium and along with bringing successful national and international events to the venue he also navigated the stadium roof collapse of 2010 and, of course, the Covid pandemic".
Mr Skelt is also an Invercargill city councillor and is leading one of the biggest council projects — Project 1225 — the construction of a new Southland Museum and Art Gallery by December 2025.
Mayor Nobby Clark said yesterday that he had not spoken to Mr Skelt yet.
"He did not say anything to me so, from my end, there is no impact.
"He continues to work as a councillor."
The Otago Daily Times was unable to contact Mr Skelt.
He has been at Stadium Southland for almost a quarter of a century. He started as general manager of the facility.
The stadium has had its ups and downs — snow falling on the roof led to its collapse in September 2010.
It has housed the champion Steel netball team and also in the past few years the Sharks basketball team.
