Those set to add Xiphophora to their list of places to see in New Zealand will have to hold off - at least for now.

Two Limehills School pupils, Anna Gilchrist and Kaitlin McKenzie, wanted to name a rock outcrop in Bluff Xiphophora, to complete a school project to find an A to Z of Southland place names.

However, their request to the New Zealand Geographic Board was declined this week.

Board chairman Dr Don Grant said the location already had a name, Burial Point, and there were concerns about adding a name "where safe navigation was an important factor".

Kaitlin was "disappointed" but planned to gather support for the name.

Of 60 place name proposals considered by the board, 11 were from the Southern area.

A proposal to make the name "Catlins" official was recommended by the board but will go to the Minister for Land Information for final consideration.

It was also agreed a lake in Fiordland along Wet Jacket Arm be named Moose Lake.

The public will be consulted on the decision.

Also to be presented for public consultation are names proposed for two unnamed features in the Kepler mountains: Mt Hill-Tinsley and Mt Pickering.
