Southland shooting: Man unable to enter South Island while on bail

The man accused of a shooting in rural Southland last month has pleaded not guilty to three further charges.

The 34-year-old man, who has interim name suppression, appeared in the Invercargill District Court via audio visual link today before Judge Ajit Swaran Singh at a bail application hearing.

He already faced a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm at Mokotua on May 26, to which he had previously entered a not guilty plea.

Today he pleaded not guilty to unlawfully carrying a pistol, discharging a pistol with reckless disregard, using a pistol to wound with intent and intentional damage of a motor vehicle at Mokotua on the same day, electing trial by jury on all matters.

Defence counsel Scott Williamson made a bail application for the man who has been in custody since the alleged offending took place.

While details of the hearing are suppressed, Judge Singh granted the man bail with conditions he live in Palmerston North on 24/7 curfew at his father’s house, he not contact the victim, his ex-wife or his children, except when a court order allows, and to not come to the South Island.

The judge also ordered that he not have access to firearms.

“I’m putting you on notice that should you breach your bail conditions you risk being remanded in custody as these are serious charges,” Judge Swaran Singh said.

He was remanded to appear on July 11.
