Southern Scenic Route reopens

The Southern Scenic Route reopened yesterday after a major slip on the Chaslands Highway in the South Catlins closed it last month.

The slip on June 22, 2.8km from where the Chaslands Highway connects to the Niagara Tokanui Highway, required a 75m section of road to be moved temporarily to allow one-way traffic through.

The Southland District Council's $15,000 quick fix included speed restrictions and traffic management, roading asset management engineer Hartley Hare said.

He said it was an important piece of road for area residents and a ''key link'' for tourists.

Further geotechnical analysis would be required before a permanent fix could be determined.

Tahakopa Valley Rd had been used as a detour from the Niagara Tokanui Highway to Papatowai until the fix was in place.

Mr Hare said the slip was still moving up to a week after the road was closed.

The council would consider reforming the road, or shifting the road, once an engineers report was completed.

In the North Catlins, Cannibal Bay Rd, from Ahuriri flat to the beach, reopened yesterday after heavy rain caused a slip there in early June.

The Clutha District Council yesterday confirmed that Mouats Saddle Road in the North Catlins and Koi Flat Road in West Otago remained closed.
